The Swedish gaming company Embracer Group has agreed to sell Gearbox Interactive to Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar, for $460 million. Embracer announced in a press release on Thursday that Take-Two will gain complete ownership of franchises including Borderlands (including Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands), Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, and Duke Nukem. The deal is set to be completed by June 2024.

Gearbox founder and CEO Randy Pitchford hinted at the company’s upcoming game in February, calling it their “best project yet.” Speculation suggests it could be Borderlands 4, following the release of Borderlands 3 in 2019. Additionally, 2022 saw the launch of the spin-off Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, with talks of a sequel currently underway.
The companies have announced that Gearbox is currently developing six interactive entertainment projects at various stages of development. These include five sequels, two of which are from the Borderlands and Homeworld franchises, along with a new intellectual property. Additionally, Take-Two mentioned the possibility of further investments in new projects and the expansion of Gearbox’s existing franchises.
Gearbox and Take-Two have a long partnership for the deal, where Take-Two acts as the publisher for the Borderlands series under its 2K label. They have also collaborated on the upcoming Borderlands movie and Gearbox’s 2016 title, Battleborn.
