J Balvin, a popular reggaeton artist, surprised the crowd at Coachella by inviting Will Smith to join him on Sunday, April 14th.

The actor teamed up with the Colombian singer to perform his 1997 hit “Men In Black,” which was featured in the movie of the same title.

Balvin kicked off the event with his 2017 hit “Mi Gente,” the same track he sang with Beyoncé at her groundbreaking Homecoming performance — and his first appearance at Coachella. Six years on, Balvin’s music collection has grown and evolved with various genres, just like the sound of reggaeton. At the DJ booth was renowned producer and reggaeton expert Tainy, who seamlessly mixed elements of house and techno into Balvin’s bass-heavy tropical melody.

Smith wore sunglasses and a black suit, the typical outfit of his character in the movie, where he starred alongside Tommy Lee Jones as investigators in a covert organization overseeing and regulating extraterrestrials.

Smith and Balvin performed the song collaboratively, accompanied by backup dancers in alien costumes and a large alien head prop for added impact. Following the performance, Balvin was escorted off stage by two individuals in black suits.

Will Smith has expressed his admiration for Balvin’s music and reggaeton overall. In 2018, he uploaded a video of himself enjoying Balvin and Nicky Jam’s “X.” Additionally, Balvin provided the soundtrack for Smith and Martin Lawrence’s film Bad Boys for Life in 2019 with the collaboration “Ritmo” featuring the Black Eyed Peas.

Smith’s appearance in the event is a notable public appearance, as he has maintained a low profile following the incident with Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. Despite this, Smith managed to secure the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Richard Williams in King Richard, the father of tennis icons Venus and Serena. Fans can anticipate his comeback in the upcoming film Bad Boys 4.
